Are you wondering what is the difference between translation, localization, transcreation, editing and proofreading? Let's find out together!
Translation
Translating means conveying a message from one language to another, as we all know. And there are many different types of translation: technical, legal, medical, audiovisual, web translation, video game translation, and many more.
I specifically work in audiovisual, video game, and website translation, but I have also done technical and legal translation work.
For a good translation, the translator uses the so-called CAT tools, which are essential translation tools. These technical tools assist the professional in delivering an high-quality their work.
Localization
Localization is nothing more than immersing the content in the culture of the target country, adapting the content with the language, expressions, and ways of thinking typical of a specific group of people.
An example?
We can mention my beloved Harry Potter. In the original version, Severus Piton's last name (yes, in the Italian version his surname is Piton) is actually Snape, a name that resonates with "snake."
If the last name remained the same, the Italian audience would not have understood the reference to the term "serpent," thus thanks to the localization process, the last name has been translated into "Piton." This makes the reference to the slithering animal much more intuitive for the Italian audience.
Localization is a fundamental factor for reaching the target audience and truly making a difference.
To localize well and in an appropriate and efficient way, emotions, feelings, and human professionalism are necessary—things that no machine can ever possess.
Transcreation
Transcreation (literally, translation + creation), or creative translation, is the process through which the translator conveys the message of the original sentence in a different way and style from the original one, and the goal is to produce the exact same effect as the source content.
But what does this mean in practice? Let me give you an example:

If the famous Vinted motto is "Don't wear it? Sell it!" had been translated literally in Italian "Non lo indossi? Vendilo!", it wouldn't surely have had the very same effect that has had thanks to the transcreation of the translator, who "transformed" the sentence into "Non lo metti? Mettilo in vendita!".

The double repetition of the verb "mettere" ("to put, to wear") creates a good impact on the Italian audience and it sounds almost like a pun.
Smart idea, perfect example of transcreation.

The goal of transcreation is to create the exact same effect as the original sentence, with a translation that is slightly different but maintains the same meaning.
Transcreation is particularly applied in the world of marketing and advertising, where the objective is to convey a message that produces a specific effect.
Editing and Proofreading
Editing is the process that involves re-reading the translated text to identify any errors, whether they are grammatical, syntactical, semantic, repetition errors, translation errors, or even errors detected as a result of the transcreation or localization process.
But what is the difference between editing and proofreading?
Proofreading, refers to the process of checking the translated content in terms of grammar, typos, and syntax. Therefore, it focuses more on the correct use of the grammar of the target language. This procedure does not include correcting the translation by comparing the translated text with the original text, unlike the actual editing work.
